TUESDAY JUNE 24TH 2008 £12/£10 (concs) ADVANCE BOOKING ONLINE TOM CAWLEY’S CURIOS – TOM CAWLEY (piano), SAM BURGESS (bass), JOSHUA BLACKMORE (drums) Tom Cawley is one of the new generation of brilliant
keyboard players. Curios was described by Time Out as “Fantastic,
fluent, romantic… this is state-of-the-art piano trio music”
and by The Independent as “Never less than spellbinding”.
Formed in 2006 by pianist and composer Tom Cawley, the distinctive sound of Curios owes all to the group’s chemistry and the unrivalled interplay between the musicians. Drawing on romantic classical music as much as modern jazz, Cawley’s compositions are melodic, fiery, serene, intense. Live, the band covers the whole spectrum – at times delicate, at times wildly percussive; flashing from a whisper to a roar. Described in Time Out as ‘state-of-the-art piano trio music’, the group’s recent gig at London’s Vortex jazz club moved the critic Chris Parker to proclaim Curios as ‘a must-see piano trio for anyone interested in where this most crucial of jazz formats can be taken’. |

THREEWAY – BEN CROSLAND (bass), STEVE LODDER (piano), STEVE WATERMAN (trumpet and flugelhorn)
“Warm, inviting, relaxed, intimate, expansive” is how the Observer described this excellent trio. A musical conversation between three outstanding players. “High class trio” THE GUARDIAN After leading his Quintet, Octet and Quartet for 15 years, to considerable critical acclaim, Crosland formed the trio in 2004 with Waterman and Lodder, two long term associates, in order to explore the subtle and open possibilities of a group without drums. The interplay between the players creates a natural intensity combined with an acute sensitivity to dynamics. The variety of the original compositions, contributed by all the group members, and the different tone colours created by the instruments ensure a satisfying and well rounded performance. The group also includes contemporary readings of choice standards in its repertoire. The group recorded its debut album, ‘Conversations’ JCCD 110, in 2005. The CD has attracted considerable critical acclaim and was featured on BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line Up on 15th April 2006 and Jazz Record Requests on 20th October 2007. Threeway undertook a highly successful national tour with Jazz Services’ support in the autumn of 2007. |

TUESDAY APRIL 29TH 2008 £12/£10 (concs) ADVANCE BOOKING ONLINE LINDA ANGELIS (vocals/flugelhorn), WEBER IAGO (piano), TIM BRUCE (drums), ANDY COE (bass), LEE GOODALL (flute)
“A man sat quietly at the keyboard. There was no attempt
at showmanship or ingratiating banter, just music like you have never
heard in your life - one heart speaking to another. He introduced himself
as Weber Iago and I knew from that moment, that I could happily spend
my life just listening to this man play music. Over the years, I had come
to forget the power of beauty in the hands of the truly gifted. Is that
love? I guess it is, the easy kind with no agenda ,no pain, just joy and
pleasure in the work of this wonderful artist”. Michel Lynn Inaba,

TUESDAY MAY 27TH 2008 ADVANCE BOOKING ONLINE £12/£10 (concs) NEON "HERE TO THERE" (BASHO RECORDS SRCD 23-2) ALBUM LAUNCH STAN SULZMANN (saxes), GWILYM SIMCOCK (piano), JIM HART (vibes)
'Sulzmann - the classy composer'. John Fordham 'Vibes are back in vogue with the emergence of phenomenally talented and mesmerising soloist Jim Hart' Sue Edwards, Jazzwise
"Gwilym Simcock played piano on a Kenny Wheeler birthday tour two years ago - and the turn of the head and raising of an eyebrow with which sax legend Lee Konitz greeted his first solo said everything. Still in his 20s, Simcock has already ascended to the podium occupied by only a handful of UK jazz pianists, from George Shearing to Stan Tracey, Julian Joseph or John Taylor. His direct influences are Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea and John Taylor, but classical music influences him just as much, particularly Ravel and Stravinsky. Those associations have him lined up for a project with composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, and his groups range from trios to big bands, to 40-piece ensembles featuring gospel choirs and strings. Now Simcock's a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist, notable as he's the first ever jazz musician to qualify" John Fordham, The Guardian STAN SULZMANN
