Basho Records released ‘Westerly’, the long awaited debut album from acclaimed pianist Nikki Iles and vocal legend Norma Winstone’s The Printmakers in April 2015. This recording is a culmination of exciting live work with this ensemble, including an Arts Council funded tour in celebration of Iles’ 50th birthday.
Engineered by Paul Allen, ‘Westerly’ was recorded in the beautiful and atmospheric surroundings of Yewfield in the Lake District, a location that perfectly complemented the mood of the music.
The band also includes the distinctive and acclaimed guitarist Mike Walker (The Impossible Gentlemen), the brilliant saxophonist Mark Lockheart (Loose Tubes, Polar Bear), bassist Steve Watts (Django Bates, Iain Ballamy) and drummer James Maddren (Kit Downes Quintet, Gwilym Simcock Trio).
The Printmakers set out to cross the boundaries that traditionally separate jazz, folk and the contemporary music world and are united by a love of song. The repertoire has the distinctive air of English song, including originals by band members, as well as exploring the relatively uncharted territory of Ralph Towner, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Fred Hersch. This is an extraordinary group that has something that will touch everyone.
“letting everyone out there know just how good British jazz can be” Peter Bacon, The Jazz Breakfast
"Right now, [Norma] is at the peak of her form... there is no jazz singer in the country to touch her" Alyn Shipton, The Times
"Iles is one of the most refreshing figures to have emerged in the UK in recent times, with a liquid sound and supple, obliquely resolved phrasing as an improviser" The Guardian
